Edgar E. Arriaga-Martinez, 21, of 6 Stephen St., was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, carrying a concealed weapon and second-degree threatening. His bond was set at $10,000 in connection with the incident early Saturday. His court date was set for Sept. 18.

Police said the victim went to a residence to visit his cousin, and his cousin's roommate, Arriaga-Martinez, began to argue with him.

Arriaga-Martinez was intoxicated and when he is in that state, he becomes argumentative, the victim told police. However, Arriaga-Martinez began uttering death threats during an argument, police said.

"He stated numerous times, 'I'm going to kill you and go back to my country,' " Stamford police Sgt. Kelly Connelly said.

Arriaga-Martinez left the room but returned with a weapon, Connelly said.

"When he came back in the kitchen, he had a machete," Connelly said. "(The victim) got scared, ran out and locked himself in the closet."

He called 911 from the closet as Arriaga-Martinez threatened him with the machete, police said.

"He heard him say multiple times, "I'm going to kill you, I'm going to kill you,' as he jabbed the machete under the closet door," Connolly said.

Officers arrested Arriaga-Martinez without incident but had to search the residence for the machete after he declined to tell police where it was, Connelly said.
